The painting (water color) is a full portrait of two German Afrika Korp soldiers and one Italian soldier, the subject being an action combat event wherein one German soldier and the Italian soldier are carrying a wounded German comrade to safety using his rifle as a sling seat. The uniform detail ,background and action are fantastic. The painting is framed in a period German oak frame, retains the original matting and has been de-acidified in order to preserve the art. The painting is 13 3/4" W by 14 1/2" H. The overall framed dimensions is 17" W by 21" H. The painting dates from the Fall of 1943 and was obviously painted by a professional war artist. The original backing was German newspaper, specifically the Schwarzwalder Tagblatt, the Nazi party's newspaper. All the pages that were used have been de-acidified and placed between acid free plastic sheets for preservation. The headline
article is about the third major battle along the highway in Smolensk on the Eastern Front. The newspaper contains
military and civilian obituaries, the equivalent of classified ads, articles and news from the various fighting fronts and
regional home front news. The painting, newspaper and all the associated period framing and matting material probably
originated from the Villingen and Donaueschingen area as most of the personal and advertisement response addresses have
those two names. This is a fantastic piece................
